Why use it?

Omega 3 fatty acids (Alpha-linolenic acids) are polyunsaturated fatty acids that the body cannot produce.

While there are many types of Omega 3 fatty acids, the most common are Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA). These oils also support heart health, brain function, weight management, liver condition, fighting inflammation, promoting bone health and preventing asthma.

Omega 6 fatty acids are also polyunsaturated fatty acids and so cannot be produced by the body. The main function of Omega 6 fatty acids is to produce energy. The most common Omega 6 fatty acid is linoleic acid.

Omega 9 fatty acids are monounsaturated fatty acids. Unlike Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, Omega 9 fatty acids can be reproduced by the body. It has been found that an increase in Omega 9 fatty acids can support our sensitivity to insulin.

What is ‘EPA’ and ‘DHA’?

EPA and DHA are two types of Omega 3 fatty acids called Eicosapentaenoic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid. ALA is a third fabulous Omega 3 Fatty acid which is found in plant sources, such as Flaxseed Oil contained in our wonderful NAS blend as well. These 3 champion fatty acids are referred to as ‘essential fatty acids’ because they are necessary for health, but not made by the body. The body uses fatty acids to maintain and create different functional molecules in the body, specifically ones related to signalling, moderating inflammation and even heart an brain function.

What age is considered Senior?

The age at which a dog is considered a senior depends largely on its size and breed, as smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger ones. As a general guideline small breeds are considered seniors around 10-12 years of age, Medium dogs 8-10 years old, large breeds 7-8 years old and giant breeds each senior stage much earlier around 5-6 years old. These milestones are just averages, and health, genetics, and lifestyle also play a role in determining when a dog shows signs of aging and we suggest starting on the senior formula approximate 1 year prior as a preventative measure in place of our standard Omega 3, 6 & 9 product.

Can cats be fed the Senior Omega oil for dogs?

Cats can use our Senior Omega oil at a dose of ½ to 1 teaspoon daily.

Can dogs of all ages use this product?

Our Senior Omega oil targeted for slowing seniors however is perfectly suitable for all ages and recommended for use as a preventive for breeds with genetic disposure to joint and cognitive decline.

How strong should the product smell?

Our Senior Omega oil is formulated with Australian Salmon Oil which has very strong “seaside” smell. This is one of the reasons our product is incredibly palatable to your pets. The product should never smell pungent or rancid but will have a sharp odour.
